Gypsum

A cleavage plate of gypsum (var. selenite), one edge of which is a crystal face. Part of the specimen is heavily included by grains of franklinite and calcite cemented together by the gypsum, and part consists of transparent, colorless gypsum largely free of such grains. The included calcite grains fluoresce bright red SW. Thin films of a green secondary copper mineral coat a few of the franklinite grains where these are exposed at the surface. This specimen, though reminiscent of the material collected in 1990 in the Sterling mine, is from an older find. It was specimen LA900 in the collection of Lee Areson, later no. ERV-2446 of Earl R. Verbeek, and is now no. FMM-2727 of the Franklin Mineral Museum.
